Planting Fields: Discover the Spirit of Gatsby on Long Island’s Gold Coast

Welcome to Planting Fields, a masterpiece of the early 20th century where the wonders of architecture and nature are seamlessly blended. Nestled in the heart of Oyster Bay, New York, this beloved estate spans 409 acres of pure wonder, keeping history alive and meaningful for all who wander through its grounds.

A crown jewel of the Gold Coast, Planting Fields is not just a place, but a collection of stories waiting to be discovered. From the graceful designs of the Olmsted Brothers to the majestic halls of Coe Hall, every corner exudes elegance and character. But this place is not just about admiring the past; it is about living it! Each year, over 200,000 visitors grace the grounds, enjoying events like the enchanting Camellia Festival, the jubilant Arbor Day celebration, and the cozy Home for the Holidays festivities, as well as year-round programs, workshops, and experiences for all different ages and abilities. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, an art aficionado, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, there’s something very special here for everyone.

Originally purchased in 1913 by the enterprising William Robertson Coe and his illustrious wife Mai Rogers Coe, the estate blossomed into a haven of luxury and refinement. From horse racing to horticulture, their passions knew no bounds, and their legacy lives on in every leaf and petal of this beautiful estate.

Coe Hall, the 65-room historic home-turned-museum, as well as the grounds that surround it, have a charming story to tell. The famed Olmsted Brothers firm, known for designing Manhattan’s Central Park, was retained by the Coes to create a lavish sanctuary that blended the built and natural world. Adorned with an iconic Rose Arbor, stunning gardens, two greenhouses, historic structures, and an extensive living plant collection, the firm had quite the task before them, and visitors today say that they certainly did their job well.

Step into the rich history of Planting Fields by booking a private tour of Coe Hall, where you will uncover the secrets of a bygone era. Architects Walker and Gillette built Coe Hall in 1918, after a fire broke out and destroyed the home that was originally on the property. The Coes used this as an opportunity to ensure their newly constructed home would have everything they needed to live the life of luxury they were accustomed to.

During the Prohibition years, rum-running was a major occupation on Long Island, especially on the Gold Coast (North Shore). Many a mansion had its secret doors, speak-easy party rooms, and hidden bars, but few were as elegantly presented as the one at Old Brookville’s Coe Hall. Imagine the whispers of intimate gatherings, the clinking of glasses in the regal Great Hall, and the laughter that echoed through hidden bar.The secrets of Planting Fields offer a rare glimpse into the lives of the Coe family, who were interested in much more than being wealthy socialites.

So come, wander through historic Coe Hall and stroll along the garden and woodland paths, where history is alive, and beauty knows no limits.
