Gold Coast Glitz: Fine Dining on Long Island’s North Shore

Long Island’s Gold Coast has always had a taste for the finer things.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Long Island’s North Shore became known for sprawling estates, elaborate mansions and lavish entertaining as some of America’s wealthiest families made their homes here. Today, traces of that glamorous era remain throughout Nassau County, from historic estates and gardens to waterfront communities and a dining scene that gives visitors plenty of reasons to make a night of it.

From intimate chef’s counters and classic steakhouses to Mediterranean seafood, Tuscan-inspired cuisine and waterfront dining, fine dining on Long Island takes many forms.

Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary, planning a romantic date night or simply looking for an exceptional meal, these Nassau County restaurants bring a little Gold Coast glitz to the table.

2 Spring | Oyster Bay

In the heart of historic Oyster Bay, 2 Spring offers a sophisticated take on modern American dining.

Led by Chef Jesse Schenker, the restaurant focuses on tasting menus and multi-course dining, with an emphasis on seasonal flavors, careful craftsmanship and premium ingredients. Its inspiration draws from mid-century Manhattan, when exceptionally prepared food was served in surroundings that felt polished without being overly formal.

Dinner currently includes a four-course prix fixe as well as a chef-curated six-course tasting menu, with optional additions such as caviar and wine pairings.

The setting makes it a natural addition to a Gold Coast itinerary. Oyster Bay is surrounded by some of Nassau County’s most significant historic sites, including Planting Fields, a former Gold Coast estate encompassing 409 acres of gardens, greenhouses and historic buildings.

Make it a Gold Coast day: Explore the gardens, greenhouses and grounds at Planting Fields before heading into Oyster Bay for dinner.

The Chef’s Counter at FOUR | Oyster Bay

For an even more intimate culinary experience, The Chef’s Counter at FOUR offers just 10 seats around an open exhibition kitchen.

Housed in a restored shingle cottage and connected to sister restaurant 2 Spring, FOUR invites guests to watch Chef Jesse Schenker and his team at work throughout an inventive multi-course tasting experience.

The space draws aesthetic inspiration from Scandinavian design, while the open kitchen places the chefs and their craft at the center of the evening.

On Thursday through Saturday, FOUR currently offers a 12- to 15-course dining experience lasting approximately two and a half hours. Rather than simply heading out for dinner, guests settle in for an immersive culinary event.

For food lovers seeking a distinctive fine dining experience on Long Island, this is one to remember.

Best for: Milestone birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions when dinner is the evening’s main event.

Rothmann’s Steakhouse | East Norwich

Some restaurants become part of the history of the places they call home. Rothmann’s Steakhouse is one of them.

The East Norwich landmark traces its history to 1907 and has been part of Long Island’s North Shore dining landscape for more than a century. Today, Rothmann’s carries that tradition forward with a classic steakhouse menu featuring prime dry-aged steaks, seafood and an extensive wine selection.

Its location also puts diners close to some of Oyster Bay’s most notable historic attractions, making it easy to combine sightseeing with an evening out.

Rothmann’s is the kind of restaurant made for a leisurely dinner: settle in, order a favorite cut and give yourself time to enjoy the classic steakhouse experience.

Make a day of it: Visit nearby Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, Theodore Roosevelt’s longtime Oyster Bay home, before dinner.

Louie’s Prime Steak & Seafood | Port Washington

Fine dining on Long Island comes with an added bonus when the view includes the water.

Set on Manhasset Bay, Louie’s Prime Steak & Seafood has been a Port Washington destination since 1905. Today, the restaurant combines its long history with a contemporary steak-and-seafood experience overlooking the bay.

The menu features USDA Prime dry-aged steaks alongside fresh seafood, a raw bar and sushi, while signature cocktails and waterfront views add to the occasion.

Port Washington also offers an ideal starting point for exploring another side of the Gold Coast. Nearby Sands Point Preserve occupies the former Guggenheim Estate, where historic mansions and more than 200 acres offer a glimpse into the grandeur of Long Island’s Gold Coast era.

The Sands Point peninsula is also closely associated with the Gold Coast setting that has long drawn connections to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, adding another layer of literary intrigue to a visit.

Make it a Gold Coast day: Explore Sands Point Preserve before heading to the Port Washington waterfront for dinner.

Bryant & Cooper | Roslyn

For a classic Long Island steakhouse experience, head to Roslyn.

Bryant & Cooper opened in 1986 and has since become a longstanding destination for steaks, grilled fish and an extensive wine selection.

Inside, dark wood-paneled surroundings set a traditional steakhouse tone, while the menu keeps the focus on quality ingredients and straightforward preparations.

Its Roslyn location makes it especially well suited to a North Shore night out. Spend some time exploring the historic village before settling in for dinner.

Best for: Celebrations, business dinners and anyone craving a classic steakhouse experience.

Limani | Roslyn

If your idea of luxury leans toward the Mediterranean, Limani brings the flavors of Greece to Roslyn.

The restaurant specializes in Mediterranean seafood and traditional Greek cuisine, with fresh fish and seafood at the heart of the experience. Ingredients including Greek olive oil, capers from Santorini and saffron from Kozani help connect the menu to its Mediterranean roots.

The bright, sophisticated surroundings give Limani a celebratory feel, making it a fitting choice for date nights, family gatherings and special occasions.

It also showcases the range of fine dining available in Nassau County. On Long Island’s North Shore, an elevated night out can just as easily mean fresh Mediterranean seafood as a traditional steakhouse dinner.

Best for: Seafood lovers and groups looking for an upscale Mediterranean meal.

Felice Roslyn | Roslyn

For a taste of Tuscany overlooking the water, Felice Roslyn combines Italian dining with one of Roslyn’s prettiest settings.

Set back from Old Northern Boulevard along Roslyn Pond, Felice offers a Tuscan-inspired dining experience featuring Italian classics and specialty dishes alongside an Italian-driven wine program and cocktails.

The elegant yet comfortable dining room extends to an outdoor patio with tranquil views of the pond, making the setting part of the experience.

During warmer weather, outdoor dining is an especially appealing way to enjoy this historic North Shore village.

Best for: A romantic dinner or leisurely meal overlooking Roslyn Pond.

La Coquille | Manhasset

There’s something timeless about French dining, making La Coquille a natural fit for an evening inspired by Gold Coast elegance.

Located on Northern Boulevard in Manhasset, La Coquille serves modern French cuisine rooted in French culinary traditions. Food and desserts are prepared on-site, while the restaurant offers both a full dining room experience and a bar for cocktails and smaller bites.

The result is a polished but approachable option for a special dinner on Long Island’s North Shore.

And if dinner is only part of the itinerary, Manhasset offers another kind of indulgence nearby at Americana Manhasset, home to more than 60 shops and a collection of internationally recognized luxury brands.

Make it a luxury day: Browse the boutiques at Americana Manhasset before heading to La Coquille for dinner.

Make a Night of It on Long Island’s Gold Coast

One of the best things about fine dining on Long Island’s North Shore is that luxury doesn’t have a single definition.

It can mean watching chefs prepare an elaborate tasting menu just feet from your seat in Oyster Bay. It can be a dry-aged steak at a restaurant with more than a century of history. Or it might mean Mediterranean seafood in Roslyn, modern French cuisine in Manhasset or cocktails overlooking Manhasset Bay in Port Washington.

Surrounding it all is Nassau County’s Gold Coast, a landscape of historic estates, waterfront communities, gardens and villages that continue to tell the story of one of Long Island’s most fascinating eras.

So make a reservation, dress for the occasion and give yourself time to linger over dinner.

After all, on Long Island’s Gold Coast, a memorable meal is about more than what’s on the plate. It’s about making an evening of it.
